Free Pillow

October 02, 2004

Free

On my way to lunch I have been passing a newspaper dispenser that has a pillow in it. Well, it's not a newspaper dispenser, really, it's a dispenser of one of those free rental guides. The dispenser says "Free," which is funny because it's like it's saying that the pillow is free. Just one of those odd details of urban life that make you (me) think, "Wow, that's weird; I should really take a picture of that or something." But then you (I) never do.
Flash forward to a week ago (if that's even possible). I have just had a couple stiff ones with my friend Porter Hall and am on my way to the bus stop, snapping photos in the twilight of fire plugs, alleys, bars, the back of my head, etc. Then I get home, look at the photos I got, and whaddya know? There's the pillow I've been meaning to take a picture of, and I got it without even meaning to.
So what does all this prove? Drinking with Porter leads to good things? Fuck, I don't fucking know. You don't come here for answers, do you? But anyway, the really funny thing (and it's not really funny ha-ha, I mean funny in the colloquial sense of "noteworthy" or "the main point" or whatever) is that that the photo I was most fond of was another one I took by accident, when I was trying to get a dramatic shot of the camera's flash illuminating some steam from a manhole cover:
